KICKBALL RULES
Rule 1: Facility
All scheduled games are to be held at District 249, contingent upon suitable weather
conditions.
Rule 2: Team Composition
Rosters MUST be completed by the START of the league. There are no exceptions. Team
captains are responsible for completing their rosters/sending out invites.
Each team in the 7-week league will have one opportunity for a roster swap, which will
be handled manually by Courtney. This swap allows teams to replace either an injured player or
a regular rostered player.
A team must have at least 7 players and may add up to 2 substitutes (maximum 9 total)
only if there are no other eligible roster players on the bench. No more than 9 players may be on
the field at any time.
Teams can choose to kick up to 14 players or kick the 9 field players. Based on each team
size, teams must be comprised of the following gender combinations:
9 players - 5 males and 4 females, 4 males and 5 females
8 players - 4 males and 4 females
7 players - 4 males and 3 females, 3 males and 4 females
If a team fields uneven numbers of each gender, players of the outnumbered gender move
up one spot in the batting order each round. A lineup card must be submitted to the umpire
before the game. This rule applies to both regular season and playoffs.
Example - Batting order for a 5-male, 4-female team: Male 1, Female 1, Male 2,
Female 2, Male 3, Female 3, Male 4, Female 4, Male 5, then repeat with Female
1, Male 1, Female 2, etc.
Each playing level must have at least one girl: one as catcher or pitcher, one in the infield,
and one in the outfield. This rule applies unless there are more women than men on the team.
If a lineup player is injured and there are no substitutes available, teams can finish with
fewer players without penalty.
A catcher and pitcher are always required on the field.
Kickball Team members must be at least 21 years old.
If a team fails to provide a roster, they will not be eligible for Playoffs.
Rule 5: Equipment
All players must wear athletic shoes or turf shoes or rubber cleats. Metal spikes/cleats or
shoes with detachable metal cleats are not allowed.
Rule 6: Game Time and Length
Each game is scheduled to begin at its designated time.
Teams have a 15-minute grace period; after that, late teams forfeit.
The game will either last for seven innings or up to 45 minutes, depending on which
happens first. If the 45-minute time limit is reached, no additional innings will begin.
In the regular season, if the game is tied after seven innings or 45 minutes, the game will
end as a tie.
In the playoffs, if the game is tied after seven innings or 45 minutes, teams will play extra
innings with the last kicker out starting on second base and a 1-1 count; this continues until there
is a winner.
Rule 7: Ground Rules
Paper/Rock/Scissors decides home and away teams in the regular season; playoff
assignments are based on seeding.
The second foul ball on two strikes counts as an out.
A strike is called if any part of the ball touches or is inside the white line home plate box,
this is at the umpire's discretion.
If a kicked ball hits the yellow fence line in the air and bounces over, it is a Home Run.
If a kicker strikes yellow and the ball bounces back or is caught in play, it remains live.
All kickers are required to be positioned behind or even with home plate at the moment
of contact with the ball. If a player kicks the ball after stepping beyond home plate, the umpire
will issue an “over” call and the play will proceed. Should this play result in an out, the outcome
stands; for any other result, the kick is repeated. No runners may advance on an “over” call, and
such an infraction will result in an out.
Rule 8: Bunting:
Bunts are allowed. A bunted ball must leave the kicker's circle. All players, except the
pitcher and third baseman, must stay behind their line until the ball is kicked; the pitcher can
advance to the red kicking circle after pitching, and the third baseman may charge the ball.
Rule 9: Outs
There are several possible ways for a kicker to be called out:
A batter is out after three strikes, including a second foul ball with two strikes.
Fly balls caught in fair or foul territory; runners may tag up and advance.
When ground balls are collected and thrown to a base for a force-out, consult MLB rules
for additional details.
Kicker kicks a homerun after your team's homerun limit.
If a runner does not run through the Safety Bag and/or touch the white first base bag
instead of the safety bag, at umpires’ discretion.
If the kicker does not round off to the foul line and makes an attempt to second base
while getting tagged or hit by the ball, at umpires’ discretion.
A base runner runs outside the baselines, at umpires’ discretion.
Tagging the runner out or throwing the ball at the runner and hitting him/her between
bases (if, in the attempt to get the runner out, a thrown ball hits the ground before striking the
runner, NO out will be made).
The ball may be thrown at a runner if aimed below the shoulders. If the ball hits a
runner’s head, play is dead and the runner advances to the next base from their last legally
touched base. Exception: A runner hit in the face or head while not in a normal standing or
running position (e.g., bending to dodge) is out.
Rule 10: Stealing
A runner may not lead off or steal. He or she must remain on the base until the ball is
contacted by the kicker.
PENALTY: The ball becomes dead, the pitch does not count, and the runner is out.
Pinch/courtesy runners are only allowed in cases of injury. The pinch/courtesy must be
the last person out on the team roster and must match the gender of the player needing a
substitute. This makes the player pulled out of the game ineligible for reentry, as it counts as a
sub.
Rule 11:
All players must avoid colliding with fielders making a play on the ball. If a base runner
causes a collision, play stops: the runner is out, the batter gets first base (unless involved), and
other runners return to their previous bases unless forced ahead.
Rule 12:
A defensive player may not block the base path unless making a play or holding the ball.
If obstruction occurs, affected runners are awarded the bases they would have reached without
interference.
Rule 13:
If a kicked ball contacts an advancing runner while in fair territory, the ball is declared
dead and the runner who was struck is ruled out, regardless of whether the ball touched the
ground prior to contact. The kicker is awarded first base, and other runners may advance only if
they are forced to do so.
Rule 14:
Defensive outfielders must remain behind the Fielding Line until the ball is kicked. If a
defender starts in front of the line and plays a fair ball, the kicker gets first base and all runners
advance to next base.
Rule 15:
Play stops when the ball is in control by the pitcher inside the pitcher mound.
If the defensive team plays the ball and subsequently throws it out of play, the base
runner(s) will be awarded the base toward which they were advancing, plus one additional base.
Rule 16:
Each team is allowed two home runs per game; after reaching this limit, any additional
home runs become an out unless both teams have two, in which case extra home runs are
matched one-to-one. If a ball bounces over the fence off an outfielder when the limit is reached,
it counts as a double.
Rule 17:
There is a 5-run max for the first three innings, this rule drops after the third inning.
Rule 18:
A fair ball that hops over the fence is ruled as an automatic double.
Rule 19:
One female must be positioned in the outfield at all times.
Rule 20: Pitching
The ball must bounce twice before crossing the plate.
No curved pitching, only straight pitching allowed.
The ball cannot be above Knee High when crossing the plate. At the umpire's discretion.
Rule 20:
The catcher must be behind the kicker and out of his/her way while the kicker is batting.
Rule 21:
Runners must head for the orange safety bag at first base; failing to do so during a play
results in an automatic out. Fielders must remain on the white bag.
Rule 22:
Every team is required to submit a complete roster by the first week of league play.
Substitutions will not be permitted during the playoffs.
Rule 23:
Players not batting or fielding must stay outside the field of play and behind the fence.
Coaches may be positioned at first and third base.
Rule 24:
Team colors aren't required, but they're always appreciated!
Rule 25:
Do not jump over the fence to retrieve a foul ball or home run; use the two openings near
the dugouts or the two gates in the outfield instead.
Good sportsmanship is required. If a player gets a warning, any further offense leads to
immediate removal from the game and a one-week suspension. District 249 offers these leagues
as fun, adult recreational sports, not as a source of conflict between players, umpires, or bar staff.

Rule 26:
ONLY THE TEAM CAPTAINS ARE ALLOWED TO APPROACH/CHALLENGE
THE UMPIRE.
