Advanced
For advanced players only. These players would be considered AA - BB level in Asheville and represent the highest skill level at Highland. Advanced rules apply in all Advanced leagues and tournaments. Players must have full understanding and mastery of posted rules, and be well-practiced in clean touches, advanced serving, and hand setting.
Inexperienced players should NOT register for Advanced leagues or tournaments and may be asked to drop out for safety purposes.
Intermediate
For experienced sand players who would be considered BB or B level in Asheville. Intermediate players should be familiar with three-hit rallies, consistent serving, and comfortable with or learning clean hand setting.
Advanced rules apply in Intermediate/Advanced leagues. Inexperienced players should NOT register for Intermediate leagues and may be asked to drop out for safety reasons.
Recreational
For any volleyball player looking to have fun! Open to players of all levels, including beginners. Players should have a general understanding of the game and follow Highland Brewing League Rules.
Players should know how to serve (overhand or underhand) and pass. Advanced rules DO NOT apply to Rec Leagues.
When Are We Playing?
8 weeks including playoffs
Game times: 6:00 & 7:00 or 8:00 & 9:00
What to Expect:
Teams play for two consecutive hours (6:00–8:00 or 8:00–10:00), rotating weekly
All matches must end by 10:05 PM
Rock, paper, scissors or coin flip determines first server; winner chooses serve or side. Loser of set serves first in the next game
Teams play two matches per week, each match is three sets over one hour
Set format: 21, 21, 15 (third set may go to 21 if time allows). Caps are 25 and 21
10-minute grace period to start with required players
10 min late = forfeit 1st game
20 min late = forfeit full match
Players must be present at game start to play. Mid-game arrivals require opponent approval
How Do Playoffs Work?
Final week is a single-elimination bracket based on standings
Rankings: Wins > Points > Losses
1st & 2nd place get a first-round bye
Playoffs have 45-minute time slots per match, both divisions play simultaneously
Rounds 1 & 2: Best of 3 to 15
Semis & Finals: Best of 3 to 21
How Do I Enter Scores?
Team captains enter scores in the League Linq App: YouTube Tutorial
Both teams can submit or edit scores for one week; after that, scores are locked
Missing or unentered scores may affect standings
If forfeiting, captains must select the forfeit option. Failure to do so may impact standings
What If There Is Bad Weather?
If dangerous weather is in the forecast, games may be postponed or delayed
Players will be notified via the league messaging system
If no message is received, assume games are ON
Games continue in light/moderate rain
Postponed or delayed if:
Severe rain or flash flooding
Lightning within 5 miles (delay is 30 minutes from last strike)
Lightning within 10 miles is a warning; play may continue unless it moves closer
Make-up matches will be rescheduled before playoffs as best as possible
